Position Summary
As a key member of a small and dynamic team, the Expedition Sales Specialist acts as a front-line ambassador for the Earthwatch brand. This role is critical in stewarding existing participant relationships, converting new leads, and fostering partnerships across a diverse range of internal and external partners.
The Expedition Sales Specialist supports Earthwatch’s global research programs by driving individual and group bookings on expeditions. Customer interactions, primarily via phone and email, focus on maintaining relationships with past participants while building connections with new ones through exceptional customer service. The role requires cultivating expertise, effectively communicating Earthwatch programs and policies to participants, collaborating across multiple departments to achieve organizational goals, and employing frequent problem-solving skills to ensure a seamless customer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Sales and Outreach
- Deliver Outstanding Customer Service: Provide exceptional support to participants at every stage of their journey—before, during, and after their expeditions—ensuring a seamless and positive experience.
- Drive Individual Sales: Help achieve sales goals by executing effective strategies, focusing on phone and email communication to guide leads toward successful bookings.
- Manage Group Sales: Facilitate the group sales process by engaging with schools and organizations, assisting with expedition selection, managing basic paperwork, processing payments, and serving as the primary contact for support.
- Optimize Sales Processes: Adopt a relationship-focused sales approach to engage leads, build trust, and guide them toward making informed decisions, with the goal of converting leads into bookings while fostering long-term engagement and encouraging repeat participation.
- Engage in Outreach: Proactively connect with potential participant leads through targeted phone and email outreach, expanding Earthwatch’s participant base.
- Pursue Professional Development: Continuously enhance your sales techniques and customer engagement skills through ongoing learning opportunities.
Customer Service
- Develop Program Expertise: Gain comprehensive knowledge of Earthwatch programs and policies to address expedition-related inquiries, resolve issues, and represent the organization effectively to volunteers.
- Build and Maintain Relationships: Manage relationships with participants to encourage repeat engagement and long-term loyalty and engagement with Earthwatch’s mission.
- Ensure Availability: Provide consistent phone coverage during business hours (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. EST) to address participant inquiries and offer support as needed.
- Provide Pre-Expedition Participant Support: Help participants prepare for their expeditions after booking by collecting payments and necessary forms and offering any additional information they may need.
- Foster Collaboration: Partner with other teams to provide a seamless and exceptional experience for participants.
Other Duties
- Collaborate on Marketing Initiatives: Partner with the Marketing team to provide content that engages prospective participants, using insights from post-fielding surveys to attract and convert leads better.
- Support Donor Development Efforts: Analyze post-fielding survey data to identify participants inclined to donate and share this information with the Development team to support fundraising initiatives.
Qualifications
- 2 or more years of relationship sales and/or account management experience with a track record of achieving results.
- Exceptional customer service, relationship-building, and communication skills, especially via phone and email.
- Creative problem-solver with strong time management and organizational abilities to meet deadlines.
- Flexible and adaptable, able to respond to changing priorities and customer needs effectively.
- Detail-oriented while not losing sight of the big picture
- Strong work ethic, self-motivated, and a driven team player.
- Passion for environmental conservation, sustainability, and/or scientific research, with international travel experience preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams); CRM experience is a plus.
- Self-motivated team player with a strong work ethic and the ability to work occasional weekends for travel and conferences.
