An overview of this role
This is a brand new role at GitLab - the first dedicated UX Engineer! Working with the Foundations team, you'll primarily be responsible for working on our Design System, Pajamas. You'll partner with design and engineering to improve the adoption, quality, capabilities and adoption of our design system. Due to the foundational nature of the work, you'll collaborate closely with designers and other engineers to improve Pajamas and it's implementation GitLab UI.

What you'll do
- Develop design system components and help evolve the design system.
- Help define and improve the interface and experience of GitLab.
- Perform accessibility audits and build standards into our workflows.
- Confidently ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members.
- Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices in a high-scale web environment.
Projects you will work on:
- Implement new components in GitLab UI based on our Design System and optimise existing components with aspects of performance, reusability and accessibility.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of design tokens in the design system
- Migration of old HAML and Vue components to align with our Design System, Pajamas.
What you'll bring
- Demonstrated front-end programming experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript (we use Vue.js)
- Have a deep knowledge and understanding of design systems theory and practice.
- Solid understanding of visual design, interaction design and usability testing.
- Experience using Git and package managers like Yarn or NPM.
- Experience writing automated tests.
- The idea of playing a key part in the evolution of our Pajamas Design System is truly exciting to you.
